Paul Griffiths on building a philosophy of nature.
Theory and Method in Biosciences group applies the philosophy of science to contemporary biological and biomedical research. It aims to add value by removing conceptual and methodological roadblocks to the advancement of science and by using high level biological theory, particularly an evolutionary perspective, to promote a more integrative approach to research questions.
T&MB is a research group within the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney, funded by Templeton World Charity Foundation and Australian Research Council. Our work contributes to Charles Perkins Centre’s integrative approach to research on non-communicable diseases (NCDs). We aim to harness the integrative potential of biological theory, and particularly evolutionary theory, in application to NCDs. Two of our funded research projects are focused on this, and both involve collaboration between our group and empirical researchers at the Centre and elsewhere. Our third, and largest project is conducting foundational research on how to measure and integrate genetic, epigenetic and exogenetic causation of phenotypes.
